What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is an embedded SIM card available on eSIM-capable devices. It provides a smarter and more convenient way to stay connected by allowing you to download data packs directly to your phone.
No more scrambling for SIM cards. No more worrying about losing your original SIM card! It’s important to keep in mind that eSIMs will only work on eSIM-compatible and network-unlocked devices.
How to check if my iOS device is eSIM compatible and carrier unlocked?
Steps:
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Scroll down to view the “Carrier lock” section. It should say “NO SIM restrictions”, meaning the device is unlocked.
- Scroll down to view the “DIGITAL SIM” section. It should contain a “DIGITAL SIM” IMEI, meaning the device is eSIM compatible.
How to check if my Android device supports eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, then your device is compatible.
When can I install my eSIM?
You can activate your eSIM at home before reaching your destination. Some eSIMs activate only upon connecting to a supported network, while others activate instantly upon installation.
Can I make phone calls or send SMS with my eSIM?
Most eSIMs provide data only. Telephony services like texts (SMS) and calls are not possible. However, internet-based calls and messages are supported.
Can I access all apps and websites with my eSIM mobile data?
Yes, unless an app or website has restrictions due to:
- Proxy settings
- Security protocols
- Location/service provider restrictions
How do I install an eSIM on my iPhone?
Steps:
- Go to Settings > Mobile/Cellular Data > Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code provided in the confirmation email.
- Optional: Modify the eSIM label.
- Configure the following settings as suggested:
- Set Default Line to "Primary" > Tap "Continue"
- Set iMessage & FaceTime to "Primary" > Tap "Continue"
- Set Mobile Data to your previously chosen esim label, in this example "My eSIM"
Do not turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to prevent charges on your other line.
The eSIM is now installed and configured!
Don't forget to turn off your eSIM until your reach your destination to avoid the consumption of your credit before traveling.
- When reaching your destination, activate your eSIM
- Upon arrival, activate your eSIM and enable Data Roaming in settings.
Important: Data Roaming MUST be ENABLED in order for the eSIM to work
Go to "Settings" > Tap "Mobile / Cellular Data" > Select desired SIM > Move the toggle switch to "On"
How do I install an eSIM on my Android handset?
- To install an eSIM, ensure that you have an eSIM compatible and network-unlocked device.
- For successful installation, you MUST have a stable Wi-Fi connection when activating an eSIM.
- Installing your eSIM before you travel will not affect its data usage and validity; with exceptions (see list at the end). Your eSIM will only be activated upon arrival at your destination, and the validity begins once you are connected to the local carrier. If the eSIM covers more than one country, it will activate at any of the covered countries (eSIMs that activate at the time of installation: Ubigi and Dtac)
- On your device, go to Settings > Network & Internet.
